Custer needs 1 day: driving the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop, a 29 km scenic road where one of the world's largest semi-wild bison herds is often spotted -over 1,300 animals-, the same day you can visit the Needles, granite formations that inspired the original design for Mount Rushmore before it moved to another mountain. May-September brings the best weather for driving through the park. It's inexpensive for the Black Hills. Every September it holds the Buffalo Roundup, a public herding of the entire herd on horseback that draws thousands of spectators, a tradition since 1965 to manage the herd's population.
