Savannah needs 2 days: walking the Historic District, the largest in the United States fully protected, with its 22 landscaped squares under Spanish moss-draped oaks, on one day, and visiting the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, with its twin neo-Gothic towers, on the other. March-May is best, with azaleas in bloom. It's mid-priced for the US. Founded in 1733 as the first city of the Georgia colony, its original grid layout with public squares every few blocks -a design unique in the country- survived the Civil War intact, giving it a reputation as one of the most haunted and photogenic cities in the American South.
