Panajachel needs 2 days as a base for exploring Lake Atitlán, surrounded by three volcanoes and indigenous Maya villages. November-April is the dry season, ideal for navigating the lake without rain. It's inexpensive, with one of the best value-for-money ratios in Central America. It's the main gateway to Lake Atitlán, described by Aldous Huxley as «the most beautiful lake in the world», and from there boats reach villages like Santiago Atitlán and San Juan La Laguna, where Maya traditions remain alive in language, dress and daily rituals.
