Hampton Court Palace

This vast and lavish complex was built for the extravagant Henry VIII and still retains much of its royal grandeur (although no member of the royal family has lived here since the 18th century). The palace boasts more than 24 hectares of gardens, over two hectares of Tudor and baroque buildings, and more than 300 hectares of parkland and green space. You'll likely need a whole day to explore the site, and the costumed guides add a wonderful period touch to your visit. If you're short on time, the highlights include Henry VIII's state apartments, the Tudor kitchens and the Royal Chapel.
