Monteriggioni

Monteriggioni takes half a day to see: the whole village, a circular 13th-century castle built by Siena as a defensive outpost against Florence, with 14 towers atop walls barely 570 meters in perimeter, is the attraction in itself. April-June and September-October bring the mildest weather. It's mid-priced for Tuscany. Dante Alighieri immortalized it in the Divine Comedy -«as on its circular rampart Monteriggioni crowns itself with towers»-, comparing its walls to the giants of Hell, and it remains one of Italy's best-preserved medieval walled enclosures.
