Altamura

Altamura needs 1 day: the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, of 13th-century Norman-Swabian origin, and a slice of «Pane di Altamura», Italy's only bread with a Protected Designation of Origin, baked to the same recipe for centuries, in a single day. April-June and September-October bring the mildest weather. It's inexpensive by Italian standards. In 1993, a nearby cave yielded the near-complete skeleton of a Neanderthal man about 130,000 years old -known as «Altamura Man»-, partly fused with the limestone rock, one of the best-preserved Neanderthal fossils in the world.
