Szentendre

Szentendre needs 1 day: walking its cobblestone streets of colorful baroque houses and art galleries. April-September is best. It's inexpensive, the most popular day trip from Budapest, just 20 km away. It was founded by Serbian merchants and craftsmen fleeing the Ottomans in the 17th century, leaving a legacy of Serbian Orthodox churches uncommon in Hungary, and since the early 20th century it became a colony for Hungarian artists, with more museums and galleries per capita than any other town in the country.
