Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a one-day visit: the entire walled village, with its covered watch-walk passable end to end, is practically an intact medieval set piece dating from the 16th century. May-September, or December for its Christmas market, one of Germany's most picturesque. It's pricier than other towns on the Romantic Road due to its tourist fame, with limited hotel options within the walls. It's the best-preserved town on the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) and, having not been rebuilt after World War II like other German cities, keeps its original look almost unaltered.
