Musée national Picasso-Paris

This museum is housed in a striking 17th-century hôtel particulier in the Marais district of Paris. As its name suggests, it is dedicated to the great artist Pablo Picasso. Descendants of the Spanish-born artist helped create this gallery by offering works to the French government as payment of inheritance tax. French law allows, in exceptional circumstances, inheritance tax to be paid with works of art instead of money. This exception is only granted if the art makes a major contribution to France's cultural heritage — which is, of course, certainly true in Picasso's case.
