Sigulda needs 1 day: the Gauja river valley, nicknamed «Latvia's Switzerland», crossed by a cable car that spans the canyon between the ruins of Turaida and Sigulda castles, is the central activity. May-September is best for hiking; in winter the town's own Olympic-era bobsled track opens to the public. It's inexpensive by European standards. It has hosted bobsled and luge trials since the Soviet era, and remains the most important winter sports hub in an otherwise mostly flat country.
