Bacalar needs 2 days: the Lagoon of Seven Colors, a freshwater lake with seven shades of blue and turquoise depending on depth, toured by boat or kayak, is the central activity. November-April is the dry season, with better water visibility. It's mid-to-low priced by Riviera Maya standards. It became the region's «quiet» destination in contrast to the mass development of Cancún and Tulum, with a municipal rule limiting building height to protect the lagoon from light pollution and mass tourism.
