Goma

Goma is the capital of North Kivu, on the shores of Lake Kivu and at the foot of the Nyiragongo volcano, and the base for visiting Virunga National Park — Africa's oldest national park. The region faces a real, ongoing instability from armed conflict in eastern DR Congo, which has at times forced the park to close to visitors; it's worth checking the current security situation before planning a trip.
