Zakouma is one of Africa's great conservation success stories: in 2010, fewer than 500 elephants remained after years of massive poaching by armed militias, and today the population has recovered and keeps growing steadily thanks to one of the best-trained ranger operations on the continent. Besides elephants, it holds one of Central Africa's largest wildlife concentrations: lions, Kordofan giraffes (a rare subspecies) and over 370 bird species. It's almost always visited by charter plane from N'Djamena.
